Ingredients

  • 3 Tbsp butter
  • 1 medium yellow onion finely diced
  • 1 package hot dogs or other sausages 12-16 oz
  • 2 Tbsp tomato paste
  • 1/4 tsp allspice optional
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground black pepper
  • 2 Tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 cup whole milk or half-and-half
  • 1 Tbsp mustard

Instructions

  • Dice onions & slice hot dogs to your desired thickness.
  • Melt butter in a large sauce pan over medium heat. Add onions and cook until softened, 3-5 minutes.
  • Add hot dog slices and continue to cook until lightly browned.
  • Add tomato paste, allspice, salt and pepper. Stir until well combined and cook for a few more minutes to let the tomato paste lightly caramelize.
  • Add flour, mix until fully combined.
  • Slowly add in water, whisking constantly. The sauce will be fairly thick and pasty.
  • Add the milk and mustard. Simmer until thickened and slightly reduced. Taste and add more salt and pepper if needed.
  • Serve over boiled or mashed potatoes!

Notes

1. Use any variety of hot dogs or sausages in this dish to adjust the flavor to your preference!
